Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
