Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
