Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
